In October 2017, the first edition of Cybathlon is set to kick off in Zurich.
Two Belgian teams consisting of engineers and sports science researchers from the BruBotics research center at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel will represent Belgium. They will participate in the "Powered Prosthetics Race" with two prostheses: the AMPFoot ankle-foot prosthesis (Pierre Cherelle - Axiles Bionics) and the CYBERLEGS knee-ankle-foot prosthesis.
The competition is formidable as they will face research institutions and companies from around the world. Not only is the competition tough, but the challenge itself is demanding: overcoming an obstacle course including, among other things, a door to open, a sofa, a rough path, an incline, stairs, and hurdles. Daily life will push our researchers and their technology to their limits. For them, Cybathlon is a unique opportunity to take technology out of the lab context and proudly showcase the work accomplished over the years.
The race towards technology that can assist people has been underway for many years for our researchers. For example, work on the AMPFoot ankle-foot prosthesis has been ongoing for over 10 years. And not to mention the countless hours spent finding an athlete, constantly adjusting, refining, measuring... the prosthesis to work optimally for the athlete, the many hours of troubleshooting when there is a problem; after all, it's research! Perhaps even more important is the fact that the race does not end for us with Cybathlon. We will continue working on robotics that advance people who can benefit from it, both literally and figuratively.
